Modern Calligraphy Course for Beginners – Crouch End, North London
Looking to learn calligraphy? Whether you’ve been practicing on your own without much success or are a complete beginner, this beginner calligraphy class is a perfect place to start. Over 3 relaxed sessions, we will cover all the fundamentals of Modern Calligraphy. You’ll learn how to use a dip pen and ink, master basic calligraphy strokes, form both lowercase and uppercase letters, and join them into beautiful words.
You’ll also explore different styles and techniques, from mixing your own ink to working with metallic and white inks. By the end of the course, you’ll have the skills and confidence to create your own small projects, like place cards or gift tags, that showcase your new calligraphy skills.
There is always lots of chatter and laughs.. Some people attend alone, some come with a friend, but we always have fun.
What You’ll Learn:
Week 1: Setting up your workspace, calligraphy supplies, pen assembly, basic strokes, and lowercase letters.
Week 2: Warm-up exercises, uppercase letters, writing words, numbers, and punctuation.
Week 3: Altering the foundation script to create different styles of lettering, tips for polished projects, and using coloured and metallic inks. You’ll also create place cards or tags to take home.
What’s Included:
A personalized calligraphy starter kit to keep with everything you need: pen holder, nibs, ink, practice paper, and worksheets.
Light refreshments and treats to enjoy during the class.
Course Details:
Small group calligraphy workshop for personalised attention from Anthea.
Dates: Monday, October 5, 12, 19, 2026 • 1 - 3.30 pm
Location: Crouch End, London (N8) and is easily accessible by public transit.
This class is suitable for both left and right-handed calligraphers. Please be aware that there are a few stairs between street level and the room we will be using. Participants must be at least 13 years old to attend and if under 18, must attend with an adult. Children younger than 13, interested in learning calligraphy, can check out Anthea’s ‘Calligraphy for Kids’ kits here.
The cost of the course is £129 including materials. By registering for the Beginner’s Modern Calligraphy Course you agree to the Course Terms and Conditions, which can be found here. Course fees are non-refundable so please make sure you are available on these dates. Calligraphy can be messy sometimes so please dress accordingly.
